Fulfilling learners' potential
What we've called 'real life skills' are those skills which under different guises make up the core of key skills, Skills for Life and functional skills. At heart, what do individual people need to learn to fulfil their potential?
For 12 years, DESQ has been placing basic and key skills into everyday contexts, recognising and drawing on learners' experiences.
We created the majority of the games and interactive learning resources for the BBC Skillswise website, as well as providing content for interactive quizzes, fact sheets and worksheets that make up the service. The site also covers the adult numeracy and literacy curriculum at a range of levels from Entry 3 to Level 2.
Skillswise is one of the BBC's most successful and long-running education campaigns. We worked closely with the BBC to respond to the needs of tutors and trainers who work with adult basic skills learners. Priorities for the service and ideas for content were shared and discussed with the users of the service before entering into production.

For NLN, we developed resources which placed the learning in a directly relevant context. For example, our resources for Family Learning, titled 'Learning is fun together', were specially designed to support a range of family learning programmes for parents and carers of pre-school children. They support the varying levels of literacy of parents and carers, as well as offering the opportunity for ICT integration in family learning programmes. In vocational resources in travel & tourism and construction crafts, we successfully contextualised skills of communication in the workplace.
Our resources for LSIS in functional skills, 'Being functional', drew on years of development of Skills for Life and key skills resources and repurposed these for those planning and delivering functional skills. In addition, we developed an interactive functional skills readiness tool, which helps providers to assess their readiness to deliver functional skills.
We've also worked on Skills for Life, Basic Skills and key skills resources across platforms for NIACE, the Adult, Family and Community Learning Service, the Basic Skills Agency, the LSC, and Ufi learndirect.
